This Art Deco tantalus features three crystal decanters set within a striking lockable carrying case of black lacquer and mixed woods, resting on a richly grained Macassar wood base. Unlike many traditional tantalus sets, which often have a Victorian or turn of the century character, this example has a much more modernist and streamlined Art Deco presence. The black handle, geometric case, chrome accents, and faceted crystal stoppers give the piece a sophisticated cocktail era look.
The term “tantalus” comes from the Greek mythological figure Tantalus, who was punished by being placed near food and drink that remained just out of reach. In much the same spirit, a liquor tantalus displays beautiful decanters filled with fine spirits, while keeping them safely secured under lock and key. Popular in England in the late 19th century and later revived during the Art Deco era, the tantalus was originally intended to keep servants or children from helping themselves to sherry, scotch, or other spirits.
