Man with Spear Sculpture Art Deco by Buchet
Item #2332 SOLD
A powerful art deco era sculpture of an athletic man and spear by the Swiss artist Gustave Buchet (1888-1963) and a rare example of his work in this medium. Bucket is primarily known as a painter who studied first in Geneva and then moved to Paris to attend the modernist workshop La Grande Chaumiere. In 1925 he became involved in “Purism”, a form of Cubism promoted by Le Corbusier.
This is more typical of his work, which is decidedly abstract
So the very “realist” interpretation of his sculpture is quite a departure but it underscores the idea that an artist does not do “simple” or “abstracted” art because they cannot master the representational form!
The Sculpture we present shows great strength, detail and a rich patina. It is set on a variegated marble base. It is clear to see the motivation of the subject whose entire body is focused on movement and achievement of a goal.
