Classic Silver Mirror by WMF with Art Nouveau/Deco design.
This gracefully arched table top beveled mirror in a silver frame is a classic example of WMF design circa 1910 and is in excellent condition. It would be perfect for a dressing table, vanity or mantle. With its wood and easel back and highly polished frame the mirror is a reflection of your good taste!
The famous German foundry ” Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik”, is most often simply called WMF. It was founded in the 1853 , then in 1892 developed a special technique for silver plating in which the silver coating is of double thickness in any parts that will be exposed to greater wear and tear. This patented process is called “Perfect Hard Silver Plating”. The intricate design is a a technique called “repousse” which is a hammered or pressed design from the back of the silver, giving it a decorative relief.
In 1910, under the art direction of Albert Mayer, WMF became famous for its Art Nouveau style and established companies for world wide exports in London, Warsaw and Vienna. Many pieces were sent to Argentina, where this gem was found, through the exclusive distributors Anezin Hnos y Cia ( Anezin Brothers) between 1910 and 1930, and it is likely that Harrods Department Store which opened in Buenos Aires in 1912 was one of the major retailers of decorative pieces such as this mirror.
