Art Deco Tea Set by Susie Cooper in Tango Pattern
Art Deco Tea Set by Susie Cooper in Tango Pattern
This is a rare and spectacular Susie Cooper 33 piece tea set of the striking modernist china by one of Britain’s most re-known ceramicists and dinnerware designers. Created in 1933 the graduated black bands on cream background comes alive with bright yellow detail. In an era of otherwise flowery and whimsical pattern names and embellishment this truly stands out as bold and forward thinking. The pattern is called “Tango" and is predominately featured in the most important books on Susie Cooper and 20th Century Ceramic designers.
Today, one usually finds a single cup, a jug or plate at auction. but here is a stunning full set of dessert plates, cups, saucers, service plate, tea pot, coffee pot, creamer and sugar . The coffee and tea pots are in the highly desirable "Kestrel" shape. The condition is excellent... with just very faint "crazing" and sign of use on the teapot and sugar bowl and one small plate.

Along with Clarice Cliff and Charlotte Rhead, Susie Cooper is famous for introducing vivid colors and avant garde designs to English Pottery and this is one of the finest and most collectable. Her career, highly documented in many books on Art Deco and Ceramics spanned more than 60 years, including her “Deco Era “ work at Crown Pottery in Burslem in the 1930s as well as through the 60s and 70s as a master designer at Wedgewood China. The set we offer today is from her early work in England and the distinctive backstamp signature with the stylized deer is on nearly each piece.

The first set of Susie Cooper dishware in the Tango pattern that we were able to offer at Art Deco Collection took over 20 years to acquire and complete so we were especially thrilled to be able to find this one of so many coordinated pieces in Argentina where it was most likely imported in 1933 at the Harrod's of London Department store which had a flagship branch in Buenos Aires.
