Complete Art Deco WMF Silverware Service in Inlaid Wooden Case

A complete Art Deco silverware service by WMF, presented in a beautifully inlaid wooden cutlery box. From the first look at the mahogany case, with its unusual leaping gazelle design inlaid into the center, it is clear that this is a very special set.

Inside, the case has been newly relined in velvet, with each piece carefully fitted into its proper place. The service includes 143 pieces in total, with dinner pieces, serving forks and spoons, fish sets, salad servers in celluloid and silver, a salt cellar with tiny spoon, and a large graceful ladle.

This is truly an heirloom set, but not one that should remain locked away, even though the original key is attached. These pieces were made to be used and enjoyed. There is something especially rewarding about setting a table with a complete period silver service and actually experiencing the quality, weight, and design as part of a meal.

The set bears the marks of WMF, the initials for Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik, the celebrated German metalware company most often known simply as WMF. Founded in 1853, WMF became one of the most important European makers of silver plated tableware, decorative metalwork, and household objects. In the late nineteenth century, the company developed its patented Perfect Hard Silver Plating process, designed to give extra durability to areas most exposed to wear.

With its complete fitted case, Art Deco styling, generous 143 piece service, and exceptional WMF quality, this set offers both decorative presence and genuine usefulness. It would make a beautiful addition to a formal dining room, holiday table, or serious Art Deco collection.

The set bears the marks of the WMF silver company, the initials of the famous German foundry ” Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik”, most often simply called WMF. It was founded in 1853 as a partnership between Daniel Straub and Josef and Friedrich Schweizer, and in 1892 developed a special technique for silver plating in which the silver coating is of double thickness in any parts that will be exposed to greater wear and tear. This patented process is called “Perfect Hard Silver Plating”.

In 1910, under the art direction of Albert Mayer, WMF became famous for its Art Nouveau style and established companies for worldwide exports in London, Warsaw and Vienna. Many pieces were sent to Argentina between 1910 and the art deco era of 1930, and it is likely that Harrods Department Store which opened in Buenos Aires in 1912 was one of the major importers of decorative pieces such as this service for 12.
