Jean Dunand Dinanderie Vase French Art Deco Rare
Jean Dunand French Art Deco Dinanderie Vase, circa 1925
A rare and substantial French Art Deco dinanderie vase by Jean Dunand, distinguished by its richly patinated surface and striking interplay of stylized floral and geometric decoration. Dating to the mid-1920s, this signed example stands 14 inches tall—an unusually impressive scale for a dinanderie vase of this type.
The elongated, gently rounded body narrows toward the base and curves inward at the open rim, creating an elegant silhouette. Across this sculptural form, abstract blossoms, scalloped petals, curling lines, and pointed leaf-like shapes form an intricate decorative composition. Angular chevrons introduce a geometric counterpoint to the softer floral elements, while silver-toned outlines define the motifs against the darker ground.
The layered patina is particularly engaging. Gold, bronze-brown, copper, and rust tones mingle with muted olive and charcoal, creating subtle shifts in color across the surface. Fine mottling and variations in texture give the metal a painterly quality, with brighter passages catching the light beside deeper, subdued areas.
Three principal decorative sections are articulated by narrow silver-toned bands. The broad central section carries the most elaborate ornament, while the warmer lower section allows the patina itself to become a prominent part of the design. This balance of intricate pattern and quieter surface gives the vase both richness and clarity.
The interior retains its original treatment, offering further insight into the mixed-metal workmanship. Signed Jean Dunand on the base, this vase brings together impressive scale, expressive decoration, and the distinctive surface effects that make French Art Deco dinanderie so compelling.
