Rare Pair of Karl Hagenauer Austrian Art Deco Candle Holders
Rare Pair of Karl Hagenauer Austrian Art Deco Candle Holders
A rare pair of Austrian Art Deco candle holders by Karl Hagenauer for the Hagenauer Werkstätte, Vienna, circa 1930s. Each piece is designed with a semicircular openwork panel raised on a round pedestal base. The design combines abstract geometry with charming animal imagery, including stylized cats, birds, and other small figures worked directly into the metal composition. The result is playful, sophisticated, and immediately recognizable as part of the Hagenauer design world.
The openwork pattern gives each candle holder a wonderful sense of movement. Straight architectural lines are balanced by curves, scrolls, and animal forms, creating a lively scene within a highly controlled modernist structure. Each holder has two flared candle cups at the top, giving the pair both function and strong decorative presence.
The undersides are stamped with the Hagenauer mark, “Made in Austria,” confirming their origin. Pieces of this type are not often found as a matched pair, and the animal cutout design makes them especially desirable. They would be excellent on a dining table, console, mantle, cabinet, or as part of a serious collection of Austrian Art Deco metalwork.
