Hand Carved Argentine Art Deco Penguin Bookends
Hand Carved Argentine Art Deco Penguin Bookends
A charming pair of hand carved wooden Art Deco bookends, each featuring a family of three penguins standing together against a mountainous background of ice. The penguins are rendered in dark wood bas relief, creating a striking contrast with the warm, lighter wood surrounding them.
There is something both classical and whimsical about penguins, and these beautifully carved birds have wonderful character. Their simplified forms, layered geometric background, and strong contrast reflect the decorative style of the Art Deco period.
The bookends were discovered in Argentina, home to some of the world’s largest Magellanic penguin colonies. We estimate that they date from the 1930s or 1940s. Decorative, sculptural, and practical, they are wonderful examples of what we like to call “useful sculptures.”
