Art Deco Black and Turquoise Vitrolite Glass Bookends
A unique pair of original Art Deco bookends constructed from thick panels of black and turquoise green Vitrolite glass. Their crisp geometric composition, contrasting colors, and highly polished surfaces give them a distinctly modernist character.
The overlapping vertical and horizontal panels create a strong architectural form, while the vivid turquoise glass adds an unexpected burst of color against the glossy black structure. Vitrolite was a celebrated material during the Art Deco period. This pigmented structural glass was manufactured with color embedded throughout its opaque body, producing a smooth, durable, and richly reflective surface. Introduced during the early twentieth century, it became especially popular during the 1930s when manufacturers began offering it in a broad range of fashionable colors.
Vitrolite was widely used for modern storefronts, architectural signage, interior walls, tabletops, kitchens, and bathrooms. It was used less frequently for decorative accessories, making this original pair of bookends an especially unusual example.
The bookends retain their original glass panels and are in superb condition.
