WMF Art Nouveau Silver Plated Wine Carafe Set with Six Cups and Fitted Tray
WMF Art Nouveau Silver Plated Wine Carafe Set with Six Cups and Fitted Tray
An exceptional Art Nouveau wine service by the celebrated German manufacturer WMF, consisting of a tall silver plated carafe, six matching chalice cups, and an elaborate fitted serving tray.
This remarkable set combines the flowing, undulating curves of Art Nouveau with the more geometric embellishments associated with the German Jugendstil movement. The tall, architectural carafe features a dramatically elongated handle, stylized finial, and beautifully embossed decoration repeated throughout the matching cups and tray.
The tray is especially unusual. Rather than being made as a simple flat surface, it was formed with individual recessed areas that allow the carafe and six cups to nest securely in place. Its sculptural border, openwork handles, and curved organic ornamentation make the tray an important part of the overall design.
Jugendstil, literally translated as “young style,” sought to balance ornament and function while finding new ways to unite art with modern industry. This complete WMF service expresses those ideas beautifully. It can be used for serving wine or displayed as a dramatic example of early twentieth century German decorative arts.
Both functional and highly sculptural, this is an extraordinary complete set for collectors of WMF, Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, and early modernist design.
WMF (Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik ) produced hundreds and hundreds of household objects in high quality silver plate that celebrated the Art Nouveau and Jugendstil movements and promoted the fashion by selling their pieces all throughout Eastern and Western Europe as well as South America in the early part of the 20th Century.
