About Eva Zeisel:
Born in Budapest in 1906, Eva entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts at age 17, intending to become a painter, but her mother prevailed upon her to learn some trade in which she could earn a living. So Eva apprenticed herself to a traditional potter and began learning her trade, first working as a designer in the Kispester Factory in Budapest, later moving to Schramberg, Germany, where she acquired skills in all phases of industrial production and became one of the first (and certainly the first woman) to move the ceramic arts into contemporary mass production.
As Eva was Hungarian and Jewish, in the late 30s she had to escape Nazism by finding work in Russia however she was wrongly accused of being part of a plot to assassinate Stalin and imprisoned for 16 months. Her experience is the basis for the novel "Heart of Darkness". Miraculously she escaped Russia and did her craft briefly in Vienna, but ultimately emigrated to the United States . She designed ceramics, china, tableware and glassware for many top American companies and is most well known for her iconic line of tableware commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art in 1946...which is still being produced and sold in stores today ! Eva Zeisel continued to design and produce dinnerware and "useful objects" until her death in 2011 at age 105 years old!
