Art Deco Silver and Gold Tropical Fish Bookends on Marble Bases
A wonderfully decorative pair of Art Deco bookends depicting two stylized tropical fish, circa 1930. The fish have an unusual two tone patina, combining silvered bodies and tails with contrasting gilt fins and flowing sculptural details.
Their rounded bodies are covered with deeply carved overlapping scales. This distinctive motif became so popular during the period that it is still referred to in wallpaper, fabric, architecture, and graphic design as the “Art Deco fish scale” pattern. In this case, it is portrayed exactly as Mother Nature intended!
