Christofle Silver Plated Champagne Bucket Wine Cooler with Original Box, circa 1940s
Christofle Silver Plated Champagne Bucket Wine Cooler with Original Box, circa 1940s
Classic and highly collectible silver plated champagne bucket or wine cooler by the renowned French house of Christofle, dating to approximately the 1940s. This exceptional example is new old stock and appears never to have been used. Remarkably, it retains its original box and original label identifying it as a “Wine Cooler.”
The design is beautifully proportioned, with a gently flared body, distinctive wooden side handles, and a ribbed, stepped foot. The contrast between the polished silver plated surface and the warm wood handles gives the piece a particularly handsome and sophisticated appearance.
The original Christofle mark and signature are embossed on the underside. The survival of the original box and label makes this an especially desirable example for the collector.
Maison Christofle was founded in France in 1830 and became one of the most important names in French silver and decorative metalwork. As the company approached its centennial, it embraced increasingly modern designs, working with artists and designers including the Danish born Christian Fjerdingstad, who played an important role in bringing Christofle into the Art Deco era.
Christofle exhibited at the prestigious 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, where its work helped establish the company internationally as a leading name in modern French luxury and design. The company remains internationally recognized today.
