Inside the frame were inscriptions including “2-18-30,” confirming its construction date, along with the names and codes “Mad-5,” “19105-F.N.P.,” and “Sunset.” Whether these were studio stock references, production identifiers, or notations tied to specific film sets is still uncertain, but they pointed clearly toward a Hollywood provenance.

Further research strengthened the connection. Harry Cohn, who led Columbia Pictures with a famously forceful presence and shaped the studio during some of its most dynamic early years, occupied a central place in the world this desk once moved through. While reviewing the book Screen Deco, Richard found a desk that resembled this one in the 1934 film Crimes Without Passion. If the same piece, it appeared to have been altered after its screen appearance, shaved down and visually softened to achieve a more conventional style in later decades. Such modifications were common in the studio system, where furniture was repeatedly repurposed for changing film aesthetics. Considering the exuberant Art Deco sets of early 1930s Hollywood, it is easy to imagine this desk originally occupying a space that embraced the boldness of the era.

The restoration process became an excavation of the desk’s earliest form. Beneath later finishes, the team found extensive black overspray, confirming that black had been its original dominant color. The carved side slats and tiered wood base proved authentic, and these original components guided the reconstruction. Silver bands that had likely been removed long ago were reintroduced, period Art Deco bakelite handles were sourced, and the top was finished in black and paired with a new piece of tempered glass with a polished pencil edge. The intention was not to reinvent the desk but to align it with the modernistic vision it most likely embodied in 1930.

Whether the desk was created specifically for Harry Cohn or was selected from the Columbia backlot for his office may never be known. Yet the evidence remains compelling. The construction date matches Cohn’s early prominence, the markings match studio practices of the time, and the desk appears to have been visible in at least one early 1930s film. Through careful reconstruction, its original character has been brought forward again, reconnecting it with the cinematic world that shaped its early life.

After the restoration was completed, additional research confirmed that the desk also appeared in Beauty and the Boss, and a copy of the film was included when the piece was ultimately sold. Its new owner received not only a beautifully restored example of early Art Deco design but also the layered history and presence that have followed it for nearly a century.
