Thonet Model No. 511 Vienna Secession Bentwood Armchairs, circa 1904

The chairs are in original condition and have a wonderful sculptural presence, with sweeping bentwood arms and legs formed in a continuous curve. The high backs are especially distinctive, combining slender vertical spindles with a horizontal crest rail pierced by a row of geometric circular openings. This refined use of line, proportion, and restrained ornament gives the design its unmistakable Vienna Secession character.

As part of the Vienna Secessionist design movement, these chairs reflect a period when furniture design moved away from heavier historical styles toward a more modern architectural language. The design is elegant, disciplined, and highly graphic, where every curve and detail contributes to both structure and visual rhythm. The frames are finished in a warm mahogany tone. The cane seats are hand woven, and the custom cushions add comfort while preserving the open, graceful quality of the design.
