Custom French Art Deco Grand Buffet, circa 1930
Custom French Art Deco Grand Buffet, circa 1930
A stunning oversized French Art Deco grand buffet, custom made in the 1930s with exceptional materials and a very high level of cabinetmaking. This is the kind of piece one could imagine being shown in a French decorative arts salon during the height of the period. Its design recalls the refined work of Dominique, Émile Jacques Ruhlmann, and Jules Leleu, while still having its own strong architectural presence.
The wood has a dramatic honey colored amboyna style grain that gives the surface a rich, almost three dimensional effect. The doors are thick and substantial, and the interiors are finished with the same attention to quality, using mahogany and pear wood. The buffet rests on a contrasting ebonized plinth, which gives the piece visual strength and helps define the bold contrast between dark and light woods.
The storage is divided between two large side cabinets, with a central glass and chrome vitrine fitted with adjustable shelves. This gives the buffet both practical function and display potential. The rounded edges soften the scale, while the all wood top provides an excellent surface for glass, sculpture, or a carefully chosen collection.
This piece would be phenomenal along a large dining room wall, in a living room, a private office, or a gallery setting. We can easily envision it with an important painting or mirror hung above it. It has the scale, material quality, and presence needed to anchor a serious Art Deco interior.
