Custom Art Deco Daybed Inspired by the George Gershwin Daybed
This extraordinary custom Art Deco daybed was designed after the famous George Gershwin daybed and created for a very special client. Handmade in Argentina by skilled craftsmen, it is a unique, one of a kind piece that combines dramatic Art Deco styling with exceptional comfort, storage, lighting, and display space.
The architectural hardwood frame is richly finished in warm tones with contrasting ebonized edges that emphasize the strong geometric design. Chrome details include the drawer handles and the metal frame surrounding the illuminated glass panel. At the center, etched and gilded glass features a classic sunray design that glows when lit. A hinged glass door provides easy access to the LED bulbs, which should provide illumination for many years.
Behind the bed, a dramatic terraced bookcase offers open shelves and cubby holes for displaying books, collections, photographs, and decorative objects. Two pull out drawers beneath the mattress provide generous storage for sheets, blankets, pillows, and other bedding.
The playful black and cream upholstery features a bold circular pattern that works beautifully with the geometry of the frame. The upholstered mattress and matching bolster pillows transform the piece into an elegant and comfortable sofa during the day, while providing a generous sleeping area when needed.
Despite its impressive scale, the daybed was thoughtfully constructed in multiple sections, allowing it to be disassembled for easier delivery and reassembled in its new location. Stylish, functional, and theatrical, this is a remarkable contemporary interpretation of an iconic Art Deco design.
