Rare 1940s Belfast Sparkling Water Illuminated Advertising Clock by Glo-Dial
Rare 1940s Belfast Sparkling Water Illuminated Advertising Clock by Glo-Dial
An exceptional example of American advertising design from the 1940s, this original Belfast Sparkling Water illuminated wall clock was manufactured in Los Angeles by the Glo-Dial Clock Co., associated with C.W. Hoffritz. Produced for the San Francisco-based Belfast Sparkling Water Company, this rare vintage advertising clock combines the bold commercial graphics of the Art Deco era with the brilliant green illumination that made these clocks so visually appealing. The dramatic black dial provides a striking contrast to the luminous green lettering, oversized stylized numerals, and distinctive geometric clock hands. The name BELFAST curves across the upper portion of the face, while SPARKLING WATER follows the lower perimeter, creating a balanced circular composition that captures the streamlined styling of American advertising during the period.

Glo-Dial clocks were manufactured in the United States during the 1940s and 1950s, when illuminated advertising became an important part of American commercial culture. Often displayed in soda fountains, neighborhood bars, restaurants, and retail establishments, these clocks served a dual purpose as functional timepieces and highly visible promotional displays. This example is particularly appealing for its original advertising graphics, strong Art Deco typography, and remarkable green illumination. Unlike conventional wall clocks, its substantial six-inch depth gives the piece a sculptural presence, while the glowing face creates a dramatic visual effect, especially in a softly illuminated room. The Belfast Sparkling Water branding also connects the clock to the history of San Francisco's regional beverage industry.
Measuring 14 inches in diameter and 6 inches deep, this authentic American advertising clock retains its original metal frame with a chrome finish in good vintage condition. The clock is fully functional and has been fitted with a new grounded three-prong electrical cord for continued use. Its illuminated dial displays beautifully, preserving the character and visual excitement that made these advertising clocks so desirable when originally produced. A wonderful addition to an Art Deco interior, vintage cocktail bar, soda fountain collection, or sophisticated home setting, this uncommon Belfast Sparkling Water clock represents a distinctive intersection of American advertising history, industrial design, and decorative lighting.
