French Longwy Art Deco Ceramic Cloisonné Vase

This French Art Deco vase was produced by the renowned Longwy pottery during the early 1920s. Its delightful scrolling decoration gives the design a graceful touch of Art Nouveau influence, reflecting the transition between the two important decorative styles.

The vase was created using the ceramic cloisonné technique for which Longwy is famous. The raised outlines separate the richly colored enamel decoration, creating the intricate surface and jewel like appearance that distinguish the finest Longwy ceramics.

Longwy is a historic town in northeastern France, close to the borders of Belgium and Germany. During the early 20th century, this region was an important center for decorative pottery, where artistic influences and advances in ceramic production were shared among the three neighboring countries.

The faiance factory at Longwy began in 1798 and developed it’s iconic style of craquele (crackle finish) and cloisonné in the late 1800s. Borrowing the concept from ancient Chinese and Japanese Cloisonné which is created with the use of metal bands which form the outlines with enamel colors filling in.,Ceramic Cloisonné duplicates this by making deep lines in the surface of the clay piece and then coloring each section with rich color before firing. Outstanding pieces were created in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco Eras.
