A rare Art Deco glass decanter designed by René Lalique for Marie Brizard, the celebrated French producer of liqueurs. Although Lalique is best known for his decorative glass and architectural installations, he also created elegant commercial bottles and packaging for luxury products.
The decanter has a graceful teardrop form with deeply molded vertical ribs that create beautiful reflections across the glass. Its distinctive stopper incorporates the stylized initials “MBR,” a monogram that appears at first to be purely decorative but represents Marie Brizard and Roger.
Marie Brizard founded the company in Bordeaux in 1755 with her nephew, Jean Baptiste Roger. After nine generations of family ownership, the company became publicly traded, and its liqueurs eventually reached markets throughout the world.
This decanter dates from the company’s golden age, when Marie Brizard produced cognac, anisette, curaçao, and other fashionable spirits. Its products were promoted with stylish advertising and gifts reflecting the glamour of the period, including the 1925 paper fan pictured with this piece.
The original paper label is no longer present, but the accompanying period image shows how the decanter appeared when originally sold during the 1920s. It remains a rare and elegant combination of Lalique glass design, French Art Deco style, and historic liqueur advertising.

Rene Jules Lalique (1860-1945) is the famed glass designer known for his creations of art glass, jewelry, clocks, chandeliers, perfume bottles, hood ornaments and full installations of windows and decorative glass in buildings of the Art Deco Era including the grand dining hall of the Luxury Liner, the Normandie. He was a major participant/ exhibitor in the Exposition des Artes Decoratif of 1925 and his work in both clear and frosted glass and the sculptural designs he achieved are most highly prized.
