Czech Art Deco Cut Crystal and Black Enamel Vanity Set

This six-piece Czech crystal vanity set is a striking example of the faceted, geometric glasswork produced in Bohemia during the 1920s and 1930s. Each piece is cut with sharp angular facets and decorated with black enamel chevrons and triangles, a combination closely associated with the workshops of Nový Bor, Bohemia, that supplied the Art Deco vanity trade of the period. The set includes a large stoppered perfume bottle at center, a matching atomizer bottle fitted with its original metal spray mechanism, two smaller stoppered scent bottles, a covered powder box, and a small round covered box, likely intended for pins or other small vanity items. Together the pieces would have furnished a complete Art Deco dressing table, each one cut and enameled to match.

The angular faceting and repeating black chevron motif across all six pieces point to the same workshops that produced Karl Palda's celebrated vanity glass, among the most sought-after Czech Art Deco tableware of the interwar period. Glass blanks for this kind of work were typically supplied by Bohemian glasshouses and finished with cutting and enameling at specialized workshops in Nový Bor, a process that allowed for the crisp, symmetrical geometric patterns seen here across every piece in the set.

Vanity sets like this one reflect the broader Art Deco embrace of geometric abstraction in everyday objects, extending the style's language of sharp angles and bold contrast from architecture and furniture down to the smallest accessories of daily life. The combination of clear crystal with black enamel was especially popular in Czechoslovakia during this period, valued for the dramatic contrast it created on a dressing table.

This set holds strong appeal for collectors of Czech Art Deco glass and vanity items, particularly given the completeness of the grouping, which is increasingly rare to find intact. Its bold geometric design also makes it a striking display piece independent of any collecting focus.
