A rare Art Deco cubist terracotta sculpture by Jan and Joël Martel, depicting a seated woman with a cello. Finished in a black patina, the figure has the strong geometric modeling, simplified form, and modernist rhythm associated with the Martel brothers’ work of the 1920s.
The sculpture is signed J. J. Martel on the front and bears the Suess Frères Paris foundry stamp on the back. Music was an important recurring theme in the Martels’ artistic expression, and this subject beautifully reflects their interest in movement, performance, and the modern cultural life of the Art Deco period.
Created circa 1920 to 1929, this vintage sculpture remains in its original condition and has never been restored. It has a substantial feel, excellent presence, and the quiet authority of an authentic period work by two of the most important French sculptors of the Art Deco era.
