Hagenauer Art Deco Black Wood Greyhound Sculpture on Brass Base
A highly stylized Art Deco sculpture of a greyhound by the renowned Austrian workshop Hagenauer. Elegant and graceful in its simplicity of form, the dog is reduced to a series of beautifully flowing curves that capture the distinctive speed, poise, and refinement of the breed.
The sculpture is carved from wood and finished in glossy black, creating a dramatic contrast with its polished brass base. The elongated legs, slender tail, arched body, and raised head give the figure a strong modernist silhouette. The underside of the brass base is stamped with the authentic Hagenauer workshop mark.
The Hagenauer firm was founded by Carl Hagenauer in Vienna in 1898. His son Karl became head of the workshop in 1928 after studying under Josef Hoffmann and receiving bronze and silver medals at the influential Paris Exposition of 1925.
Karl Hagenauer created a broad range of decorative and useful objects, including sculptures, mirrors, cigar cutters, bookends, and automobile mascots. His work ranged from humorous and playful figures to highly refined modernist designs such as this greyhound.
Karl’s younger brother Franz Hagenauer concentrated more specifically on sculpture, frequently drawing inspiration from African art and simplified human forms. Together, Karl and Franz established the elegant and immediately recognizable visual language that made the Werkstätte Hagenauer one of Austria’s most important decorative arts workshops.
This greyhound is an excellent example of the Hagenauer ability to capture the essential character of an animal through economy of line, careful proportion, and sculptural movement.
