Marnix D’Haveloose Art Deco Bronze Dancer, circa 1930
Marnix D’Haveloose Art Deco Bronze Dancer, circa 1930
A monumental Art Deco bronze sculpture by the listed Belgian artist Marnix D’Haveloose, 1885 to 1973. The figure represents a classical nude dancer standing in an elegant pose, with her arms fully outstretched. The sculpture has a rich black patina and is signed on the base. Its scale, balance, and refined modeling give the work a commanding presence.
D’Haveloose brings together classical form and Art Deco stylization in a very effective way. The figure is graceful, but also strong. The artist clearly understood the relationship between movement, anatomy, and proportion. The pose is open and expressive, yet the surface remains controlled and beautifully finished.
Marnix D’Haveloose is documented in major reference books on Belgian artists, with biographical information and photographs of related works. One documented example shows a similar period statue displayed in front of a museum associated with the artist. His work has also appeared in significant international auctions.
Like many accomplished Belgian artists of the period, D’Haveloose is not as widely known as some of his French contemporaries. Even so, this bronze shows a serious understanding of form, physical presence, and sculptural detail. It is a powerful example of Belgian Art Deco sculpture and would be an impressive addition to a serious collection, gallery setting, or period interior.
