Art Deco Bronze Blue Bird Bell by Édouard Marcel Sandoz

A rare and wonderfully imaginative Art Deco bronze table bell by the celebrated Swiss sculptor Édouard Marcel Sandoz. Created circa 1920, the sculpture depicts a highly stylized blue bird with its head raised and long beak extended upward. The simplified geometric form reflects the influence of Cubism while retaining the lively personality and gentle humor associated with Sandoz’s animal sculptures.

The bronze retains its original dark brown and copper patina, with subtle variations that beautifully define the bird’s body, wings, and angular base. Both sides are signed “E. M. Sandoz,” along with the Susse Frères foundry signature and seal. The concealed bell remains functional and produces a rich, resonant ring.

Édouard Marcel Sandoz (1881–1971) was born in Basel, Switzerland, and became internationally recognized for his sculptures of animals. Working through the Art Nouveau, Cubist, and Art Deco periods, he created works in bronze, porcelain, ceramic, stone, silver, and other precious materials. His bronzes are particularly admired for their geometric forms, smooth surfaces, expressive character, and beautifully applied patinas. Univers du Bronze

Sandoz also collaborated with important manufacturers, including Christofle, for whom he created highly collectible designs for the Gallia collection. Born into the prominent Sandoz family, he was able to devote his life to artistic exploration and support many ambitious creative projects. Today, his animal sculptures are highly sought after by collectors for their rarity, originality, and unmistakable personality.
