"Evolution" is an original ceramic sculpture by French artist Pascal Jarrion, a tall vertical composition that fuses the form of a stringed instrument with the stacked, totemic silhouette of a figure. The scrolled head of a violin, its dark f-hole, and taut fluted strings emerge gradually as the eye travels down the piece.
Pascal's distinctive style brings together Cubism, Art Deco, and a sense of ancient or ceremonial form, and "Evolution" leans especially into that archaeological quality. The sculpture reads less like a single frozen image and more like a form caught mid-transformation, as its title suggests, shifting between instrument and figure depending on the angle from which it is viewed.
The richly textured ceramic surface carries a warm, weathered terracotta tone accented by deep charcoal recesses, a finish that gives the piece the worn, sun-baked look of an object unearthed rather than freshly made. This surface treatment reinforces the sculpture's ancient, artifact-like presence while keeping its geometric construction firmly rooted in twentieth-century Modernism.
Every side of the sculpture rewards close looking. The scrolled top and small carved sound hole suggest the head of a stringed instrument, while the deeply cut vertical grooves running down the lower two-thirds evoke both strings and fluted architectural columns. The interplay between positive and negative space, the dark voids cut into the clay against the raised terracotta ridges, gives the piece strong shadow and depth from any viewing angle.
Mounted on a polished round black base, "Evolution" stands 20 inches high on a narrow footprint of 6 by 5.5 inches, giving it a commanding vertical presence for its size.
