This intriguing original pastel and charcoal portrait depicts an elegant woman dressed for a masquerade, theatrical performance, or formal carnival celebration. Her elaborate costume, feathered hat, jewelry, and decorative mask create a mysterious and romantic image filled with the atmosphere of late nineteenth century European society.
The work is attributed to French artist Eugène Petit, who lived from 1839 to 1886. Although it predates the Art Deco period, the stylized presentation of the woman, dramatic fashion, and sophisticated theatrical quality make it especially appealing within an Art Deco collection.
Dating from approximately the 1880s, the portrait belongs to the early years of the Belle Époque, the period in France remembered nostalgically as the “Beautiful Time.” Known in the United States as part of the Gilded Age, this era celebrated fashion, entertainment, nightlife, masked balls, and an increasingly cosmopolitan European culture.
The painting was acquired in Belgium, where it had reportedly been stored for many years. It remains in its original period frame and is in very nice vintage condition. Works by Eugène Petit have appeared at auction internationally, with prices varying according to subject, size, and medium.
