Jugendstil Silver Plate Jardinière Centerpiece, circa 1900
Jugendstil Silver Plate Jardinière Centerpiece, circa 1900
This elegant silver plate centerpiece is best described as a Jugendstil jardinière, the German and Austrian interpretation of Art Nouveau. Rather than the flowing floral excess often associated with French Art Nouveau, this piece has a more structured, architectural presence, placing it closer to Jugendstil or Vienna Secession design, circa 1900 to 1910. Its elongated form, raised handles, and decorative metalwork suggest it was intended as a table centerpiece, plant holder, or floral jardinière.
The piece would have been used to hold a small potted plant, flowers, greenery. These objects were fashionable in refined European interiors at the turn of the century, where dining tables, sideboards, and salons were often arranged with decorative metalwork, ceramics, glass, and plants. The silver plate surface gives it a formal quality, while the design has the artistic individuality associated with the Art Nouveau period.
This is a beautiful decorative object for collectors of Jugendstil, Art Nouveau, Secessionist design, and early twentieth century European metalwork. It has the visual strength to stand alone as a sculptural centerpiece, while also remaining practical as a plant holder or floral vessel.
