Copper and Chrome "Skyscraper" Andirons by Donald Deskey

Item #3607 SOLD

An Art Deco Pair of “Skyscraper” Andirons designed by Donald Deskey, famed designer of Radio City Music Hall, hundreds of furnishings, household decorative objects, and graphics. These chrome and copper andirons are especially rare, as most of Deskey’s pieces are decidedly more “mid-century,” but these embody everything iconic about Deskey’s “Deco” roots.

He did attend the Paris Exposition of 1925 and his early work reflects a touch of the style (such as the rich use of mixed metals) and the shape that evokes a streamlined skyscraper with its stepped up form.

If you have a fireplace, this will be a beautiful decorative element—and it isn’t even necessary to add logs or fire! Uplights placed inside the hearth will truly make these gleaming andirons “come to life.”

Donald Deskey (1894-1989) received his education at the University of California and ultimately created the design consulting firm in New York City. specializing in furniture and textile design.  His Table Lamp manufactured from 1927-1931 brought him recognition, but winning the competition to create the interiors of Radio City Musi Hall was a crowning  achievement,
