Offered here is the iconic 1940 Zenith model 12-S-470, affectionately known among collectors as the “Aztec” a beautifully engineered and stylistically advanced twelve-tube console radio from the final year of Zenith’s celebrated shutter dial series. Produced just before the U.S. entered World War II, this model represents the end of an era for Zenith’s innovative pre-war designs and remains one of the finest visual and acoustic statements ever made in American radio manufacturing.
The bold design is anchored by the signature circular "black dial," encased within a dramatic rounded panel flanked by sleek horizontal control wings. Its geometric speaker grille and black lacquer base add Streamline Moderne flair to the otherwise rich architectural cabinet, which is crafted in matched walnut and burl veneer. The visual symmetry and rich grain patterns make this one of Zenith’s most distinctive cabinets. This example has been fully refinished using traditional lacquers and toned shading to recreate its original 1940 showroom appearance.
Inside, the 12-tube Superheterodyne chassis is fully restored for optimal performance. The shutter dial mechanism operates smoothly, the tuning eye responds beautifully, and a new auxiliary input jack has been discreetly added, allowing you to enjoy music streamed from any digital source such as a smartphone or Bluetooth adapter. This unit also retains its factory original "Wavemagnet" internal antenna, speaker, grille cloth, and all correct Zenith knobs.
The sound quality is exceptional, filling a room with rich tone and deep resonance, testament to the robust circuitry and large internal speaker. It also features the early TV/Phono jack introduced by Zenith as part of their forward-looking approach to multimedia utility.
