The Zenith Model 12-S-445 is one of the company’s most powerful and desirable tabletop radios. Introduced for 1940, this substantial set features Zenith’s celebrated Shutterdial, often called the “Robot Dial,” in its updated form following the original 1938 design.
Its impressive 12 tube chassis delivers the range, sensitivity, and rich sound more commonly associated with a large floor console. The sculptural cabinet combines contrasting veneers, rounded corners, horizontal detailing, and an unusual offset speaker grille that gives the radio a distinctly modern Art Deco presence.
The 12-S-445 introduced two important Zenith innovations. The first was the Radiorgan tone control system, operated by six pull tabs positioned beside the dial and offering 64 possible tonal combinations. The additional tabs control the radio’s power functions.
The second innovation was Zenith’s Transcontinental Tip Touch Automatic Tuning system. With the band selector placed in the automatic position, the listener could instantly select from eight preset stations. Unlike mechanical preset systems that depended upon strong local signals, Zenith’s electrical system used individually tuned circuits and could be adjusted for nearly any standard broadcast station, whether local or distant.
This radio has received an extensive restoration with careful attention given to its original appearance. The cabinet has been completely refinished, while the knobs, fabrics, decorative details, and overall character have been sensitively preserved. The electronics have also been restored for dependable performance and excellent sound.
A discreet 1/8 inch auxiliary connection has been added, allowing the radio to play music from a Bluetooth receiver, smartphone, computer, tablet, iPod, record player, or other compatible source. Enjoy Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music, personal playlists, podcasts, vintage broadcasts, or vinyl recordings through the warm analog sound of its restored tube amplifier.
