Large Art Deco Hunter and Panther Sculpture by Demetre Chiparus
Large Art Deco Hunter and Panther Sculpture by Demetre Chiparus
An impressive large Art Deco sculpture by the celebrated artist Demetre H. Chiparus, depicting a powerful hunter confronting a panther or lion. The dramatic composition captures the hunter in motion, raising his original bronze spear as the animal prepares to strike.
The art metal figures retain their beautiful green verdigris patina, creating the appearance of aged bronze and emphasizing the sculptural details. The group is mounted on an angular multicolored marble base in shades of green, white, and black, perfectly complementing the strong geometry of the composition.
Measuring approximately 36 inches wide, this is a substantial and commanding sculpture. It would make an extraordinary focal point on a large console, mantel, buffet, or in an entryway or living room.
The sculpture is in excellent condition and is inscribed “D. H. Chiparus” on the base. The bronze spear and verdigris patina are original.
Chiparus of course the master sculptor, arguably the most important artist for statues of the Art Deco period. He always had a way of rendering both men and women in a most natural and desirable way. A very important piece, pictured in many books on Art Deco statues. This Chiparus statue nicely featured in this, the authoritative book by Alberto Shayo.
