Mihail Chemiakin – Original Mixed Media Drawing, 1976 – Signed and Dated

An extraordinary and vibrant example of Mihail Chemiakin’s early experimentation with form and line, this original signed work on paper dates to 1976 and is executed in watercolor and ink. In contrast to his theatrical compositions and darker allegories, this piece reveals a rare glimpse into Chemiakin’s lyrical, almost musical, abstraction—where biomorphic figures float and intersect with a rhythmic sense of movement.

Using a layered palette of ochre, crimson, teal, and sage, Chemiakin constructs an overlapping trio of enigmatic forms. The central figure, rendered in rich golden yellow with machine-like articulation, appears locked in gesture—its companions echoing like visual shadows or memories.

The transparent layering and linear accents give the composition a sense of fluid architecture, reinforcing Chemiakin’s lifelong engagement with psychological symbolism and metaphysical transformation.

This work is hand-signed in ink “M. Chemiakin” and dated “76r.” in the upper right corner. The piece is presented in a period-appropriate Art Deco–style frame with an embossed geometric border in champagne and gold tones. It is matted in cream linen, which subtly offsets and elevates the vibrant composition. The overall presentation speaks to a careful, thoughtful preservation of a significant early original work.

Provenance:
Acquired directly from the artist's collection in the 1980s, when we met,  where it had remained since the late 1970s. Believed to have been exhibited in a U.S.-based nonconformist Russian art group show shortly after Chemiakin's arrival in New York, though exhibition records are unconfirmed. Included in a group of early works exploring abstraction and movement.

Condition:
The artwork is in excellent condition with no visible fading, staining, or foxing. Colors remain vivid and structurally sound. The mat and frame are also in excellent shape, with only minor age-appropriate wear to the outer edge of the frame. No signs of warping or moisture exposure. Ready for display.
