Mihail Chemiakin, "Carnival at St. Petersburg", Original Gouache, 1980
A major original work by Russian-born artist Mihail Chemiakin, this vibrant gouache on paper titled "Carnival at St. Petersburg" exemplifies the artist's fantastical visual language developed during his years in exile. Signed and dated 1980, this composition is a striking narrative tableau, rendered in vivid, jewel-toned hues and meticulous textures. It depicts two surreal, anthropomorphic figures in a stylized confrontation or dialogue—perhaps allegorical representations of dualities Chemiakin often explored: tradition vs. rebellion, grotesque vs. sublime, or authority vs. performer.
The composition radiates theatrical energy, reflecting the carnivalesque themes that recur throughout Chemiakin’s work. Elements of commedia dell’arte, Russian folklore, and baroque ornamentation are fused in his signature metaphysical surrealism. The highly worked surface and precise detailing attest to the artist’s technical mastery and philosophical depth. This piece is a rare and important example of Chemiakin’s early post-Soviet period in France and New York, following his expulsion from the USSR for “decadent tendencies.”
Framed with museum-quality linen and a geometric Art Deco-style metallic surround, this painting is not only a visual centerpiece but also a critical cultural artifact from one of the most enigmatic and visionary artists of the late 20th century.
