Amsterdam School of Design, Pair of Restored Stained Glass Sconces, Holland, circa 1920–25

This dramatic pair of stained glass fixtures is a rare architectural example from the Amsterdam School of Design, dating from the Netherlands circa 1920–25. Originally mounted on the exterior of a period building, these fixtures have been meticulously restored: the iron framework has been brought back to like-new condition, while the richly colored stained glass panels, each individually crafted yet unified in motif, have been preserved and completed in authentic period style.

The stained glass panels are a defining feature of these lanterns, composed of deep amber, moss green, and smoky opal tones that glow with a rich, atmospheric warmth when lit. Each panel is hand-cut and assembled with intentional asymmetry, consistent with the Amsterdam School’s expressive, anti-industrial ethos. While no two panels are exactly alike, they harmonize through their rhythmic geometry and bold coloration. The effect is both mystical and modern, a quality that allows these lights to feel at home in a variety of environments, from classic period rooms to more eclectic or contemporary interiors. The glasswork offers a tactile depth and painterly surface that transforms each lantern into a piece of luminous sculpture.

Boldly geometric yet highly expressive, the design captures the essence of the Amsterdam School, a uniquely Dutch movement that bridged Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, and early Art Deco. A landmark reference for this style is the renowned Tuschinski Theater in Amsterdam, widely considered the most glamorous and iconic example of this design philosophy. Still operating today, the theater offers daily film screenings, guided tours, and cultural events, showcasing the enduring beauty and imaginative richness of this architectural tradition.

Ideal for use in interiors that celebrate historical elegance or creative eclecticism, these lanterns bring presence and poetry to entryways, salons, or feature walls: their sculptural form and stylized panels radiate warmth and sophistication.
