Reverse paint, sometimes called  verre églomisé   is a technique employed  since the Middle Ages, but made especially popular in the 1920s and 30s when it was used to decorate serving trays and picture frames . The image is applied on the back side of the glass so that we see the shiny side...and can easily clean the surface without harming the art.
