Admiral Radio and Phonograph

Item #3543 SOLD

The Admiral 5Y22A Model is a combination Radio and Phonograph.  Made in 152, its a bit later than most of the things we offer but with its striking dark chocolate bakelite body and stylized gold dial it makes a bold design statement.  The radio works well, after a brief warm up (as all radios of this period require) it powers up to produce e a strong local AM signal with good reception.

The record player also works well and can be used with various speeds.  The components are in great condition and even comes in its original box.  A phonograph  would be perfect for a collection of true vintage vinyl which  always sounds best on these speakers.

The Admiral Company (also alternatively called Continental Radio) was founded in 1934 and quickly rose to success.  Featured in displays at  the Worlds Fairs of 1939, it also became a foremost manufacturer of television sets for home use. It was later purchased by the Maytag company and its products are still made today.

Here is an advertisement for this model when it was first introduced. (Note that $79 in 1952 would be equivalent to about $922 today !
