French Art Deco Marble Clock with Garnitures
Item #2285 SOLD
Beautiful, functioning Art Deco Marble Clock is accented with chrome and copper embellishments and garnitures. The motif is one of high style greyhounds racing around the edges of both the clock and the garnitures.
“What is a garniture?” You may ask …since this is no longer something frequently created, but it had tremendous popularity in the 18th and 19th Century and the early years of the 20th.
Basically, a garniture is a collection of three matching , though not identical, pieces intended to be displayed together… most often on a mantlepiece. Very often it is a clock with two candelabra, vases or sculptural pieces meant to fill the space by placing the side pieces as close to the center object (in this case a clock) or as far apart as one wishes.
In our offering, the side piece “garnitures’ function only to make the clock a bigger and more beautiful statement by echoing the design of heavily etched marble. The chrome balls, copper squares studding the clock in place of typical numerals and the copper strips are wonderful accents.
