About Karl Hagenauer and the Hagenauer Werkstätte

The Hagenauer firm was established in Vienna, Austria, in 1898 by Carl Hagenauer. His son Karl Hagenauer (1898–1956) assumed leadership in 1928, bringing the atelier to international acclaim. Educated under the legendary Josef Hoffmann, Karl gained recognition early in his career, earning bronze and silver medals at the 1925 Paris Exposition. Under his guidance, the workshop produced a wide array of functional and decorative objects, including mirrors, cigar cutters, bookends, hood ornaments, and whimsical figurines. Karl's designs often combined humor and stylization, with ultra-modern sculptures becoming a hallmark of the atelier's work.

Franz Hagenauer (1906–1986), Karl's younger brother, distinguished himself as a sculptor, drawing inspiration from African art. His long career allowed for an evolution of design, producing some of the most elegant and iconic pieces attributed to the Hagenauer name. While the workshop is known for its animal sculptures, Franz’s specialty was the female form, depicted in Spanish dancers, mythological goddesses, and African-inspired figures.

The *Karl Hagenauer Accordionist* stands as a quintessential example of the atelier’s legacy, blending functional art with playful design. It embodies the innovation, artistry, and meticulous craftsmanship that define the Hagenauer Werkstätte and the broader Art Deco movement.
