French Art Deco Statue Hand Carved Rosewood Woman with Fruit by G. Verez

Item #3037 SOLD

French Art Deco Statue Hand Carved Rosewood Woman with fruit by G. Verez. Design circa 1925, inspired by the French International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts (The Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, held in Paris in 1925, made the architectural and design style known as Art Deco highly popular for the next 15 years.)

This extremely detailed wood carving (one piece of solid Rosewood), seems like an impossible task. The female is rendered in such a beautiful and tranquil way, her beautiful face looks outward as she manages to offer a beautiful bouquet of stylized fruit. Notice all the carved details and the grain of the wood, her cubist scarf adds texture and dimension to the overall design. As we are still researching the artist, the quality of this work is spectacular. Artist signed G. Verez on the front lower base and stamped “made in France” on the bottom.

Wood carving is a form of woodworking utilizing a cutting tool (knife) in one hand or a chisel by two hands or with one hand on a chisel and one hand on a mallet, resulting in a wooden figure or figurine, or in the sculptural ornamentation of a wooden object. The phrase may also refer to the finished product, from individuasculptures. A woodcarver begins a new carving by selecting a chunk of wood the approximate size and shape of the figure he or she wishes to create or if the carving is to be large, several pieces of wood may be laminated together to create the required size. The type of wood is important. Hardwoods are more difficult to shape but have greater luster and longevity. Softer woods may be easier to carve but are more prone to damage. Any wood can be carved but they all have different qualities and characteristics. The choice will depend on the requirements of carving being done: for example, a detailed figure would need a wood with a fine grain and very little figure as a strong figure can interfere with ‘reading’ fine detail.
