Art Deco Folies Bergère Silver Jewelry Cigarette Box French
Item #2714 SOLD
An Art Deco silver box with lock and key to hold jewelry, cigarettes and treasures. This unusual casket done in high relief is rich in iconic symbolism of the “jazz age”. French in origin, it may have been made as a souvenir of the Folies Bergere, and was certainly influenced by the Maurice Picard sculpture that graces the front of the famous building. We can see the “kick line” of chorus girl’s legs and the word “Foli…” and “Ber…”but there is so much more to discover in examining the many images “en collage”.
Other words inscribed reference “cafe”, tabac, news. Vignette depictions of men, flappers, pearls, pistols, playing cards, watchful eyes, bottles and glasses, candles, cigarettes and buildings cover every surface of the box.
Inside, it is lined in black velvet and has the original key. Truly spectacular in its design and perfect condition, this piece is completely unique.
