Art Deco Collection Custom Carpet - Lelu
Item #8
This fabulous carpet designed by Paule Leleu circa approx. 1937, maybe just in time for the Paris Exposition. The very strong and artistic design shows the influence of using a black background to help exaggerate the labyrinth interior design. Since this is a rather symmetrical design, it could be created in a range of rectangular sizes.
Bio Leleu, Paule French 1906-1987
The daughter of famed Jules Leleu, in the 1930′s she took over the rug department from Da Silva Bruhns and assisted Anne Grattepain. Paule Leleu’s rugs feature symmetrical caisson arrangements and repeating geometric patterns with diamond or linear motifs. From 1940, she designed many circular compositions, with geometric and floral diaper patterns sculpted in relief.
