Lawson Model P40 “New Yorker” Art Deco Electric Flip Clock
Lawson Model P40 “New Yorker” Art Deco Electric Flip Clock
A beautifully refurbished Lawson Model P40, Style No. 490 “New Yorker” electric desk or shelf clock, dating from approximately 1940 to 1948. This striking American Art Deco clock combines a streamlined copper case with polished brass trim and a wonderfully architectural profile.
The clock has been completely disassembled and carefully serviced. The movement and rotor were cleaned, lubricated, and adjusted for proper operation. The original copper finish was cleaned and polished to restore its rich glossy appearance, while the brass trim was removed and buffed to a bright shine. A new vintage style wall plug and cloth covered electrical cord were installed for safer modern use.
The New Yorker is an electric cyclometer style clock, often referred to as an early “digital” clock because the time is displayed on rotating numbered drums rather than with conventional hands. The changing numbers give it a wonderful mechanical quality that feels both futuristic and unmistakably Art Deco.
Tested for accuracy and ready to use, this classic Lawson clock would look equally at home in a den, office, living room, or vintage clock collection. Examples appear from time to time, but finding one in this condition, with such careful restoration and strong original character, is increasingly difficult.
