A vanity/secretary with a glamorous past, this piece comes from the famed Sunset Tower Hotel (formerly the Argyle, also the St James Club ).  Built and furnished in 1929 in the high Art Deco Style, hundreds of famous movie stars , musicians and writers have stayed or even lived in this building.

 

The vanity table (or secretary)  was in one of the suites, and crafted of  honey colored anboyna wood with leather inset panel  and ivory knobs.  The center piece lifts to reveal storage (for makeup or for stationery) and is mirrored on the reverse. Four petite drawers open for extra storage.

 

The curved shape is unusual and  elegant. and the finish is in perfect condition. Sitting at this piece one can imagine what film star of the Golden Age may have touched up her lipstick or written a romantic letter. Former residents of the Sunset Tower Apartments and Hotel include Marilyn Monroe, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Paulette Goddard.

The Sunset Tower Hotel, previously known as The St. James’s Club, and The Argyle, is a historic building and hotel located on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood California.  Designed in 1929 by architect Leland Bryant it  opened in 1931, and  is considered one of the finest examples of Streamline Modern/Art Deco  architecture in the Los Angeles area. In its early years, it was the residence of many Hollywood celebrities, including John Wayne, Howard Hughes , Clark Gable, Errol Flynn and Frank Sinatra. After a period of decline in the early 1980s, the building was renovated and has been operated as a luxury hotel under the names The St. James’s Club, The Argyle, most recently returning to the name  Sunset Tower Hotel.
