French Silver Bronze Art Deco Dancer
Beautiful, athletic, nude sculpture of French Art Deco Dancer in cast bronze with silver plated finish exemplifies the grace and strength that were prized elements of 1920's female statuary. Even without her fashionable bobbed hairstyle, we can tell she is from the deco era when the representation of women evolved from soft, curved reclining forms to the dynamic images full of energy. She appears to be ready to leap, with arms outstretched ,to twirl right off her two toned and faceted marble base.
There is a signature in the metalwork and the silver is in excellent condition.
Below are images of Suzanne Rachel Lenglen, French Olympic medal winner and repeating champion at Wimbledon in the 1920s who caused a sensation with her short hair wrapped in a headband (much like our statue) ,her tennis costumes with bare arms and shortened skirts and her dynamic way of playing tennis while somehow striking poses that inspired fashion designers such as Jean Patou and sculptors of the period.
