Armand Lemo “Veil Dancer” Bronze Sculpture, French Art Deco, circa 1925
This elegant Art Deco bronze sculpture by Armand Lemo, created around 1925, captures a sensuous and theatrical moment in the form of a “Veil Dancer.” Cast in bronze with a double-patinated finish—silvered front, golden accents, and warm bronze tones—this striking figure stands gracefully atop a rich, dark green marble base with gilt trim. The use of multiple patinas adds visual texture and depth, enhancing the dramatic play of light across the dancer's form.
The sculpture portrays a poised female figure holding up a large veil or draped cloth, which conceals much of her body while artfully revealing the front in a silvered finish. Her hair, rendered in a stylized bob characteristic of the 1920s, is adorned with a delicate gold floral motif. The composition suggests both modesty and exhibition, a signature theme of the “veil dancer” motif popular during the Art Deco era.
Armand Lemo (1881–1935) was an accomplished French sculptor whose work spanned both the late Art Nouveau and early Art Deco periods. Pieces like this exemplify his skill in depicting feminine grace with decorative boldness. This sculpture is a rare example of Lemo’s refined sensibility, combining symbolism, fashion, and movement in a single captivating form.
