Pair of Exotic Macassar & Shagreen Art Deco table lamps

Item #1265 SOLD

Presented here is a pair of what one might consider the most glamourous matching night stand, end table or buffet lights we have ever offered. This is an original pair with rewired cloth and custom matched parchment/leather shades. You can see the delicate use of shagreen material, inlayed in a modernist geometric motif on macassar ebony. It is applied on the both front, back, around the base and top. I have not seen a pair this fine come around in a long time. It took me 1.5 years to convince the seller to let them go. It then took about 2 months to have the perfect complimentary leather shades hand made to fit just right. The results: a glorious pair of lamps that certainly will look fantastic (and sophisticated) wherever they might find their next resting place.

Shagreen is a type of leather or rawhide consisting of rough untagged skin, formerly made from a horse’s back or that of an onager (wild ass), and typically dyed green. Shagreen is now commonly made of the skins of sharks and rays. The word derives from the French chagrin (sorrow) which in turn is borrowed from Turkish sa?rı “the back of a horse”. The roughness of texture led to the French meaning of displeasure or ill-humor.
