Gilbert Rohde for Herman Miller Amorphous Kidney Paldao Desk with Chair

Item #2542 SOLD

Important  American desk manufactured by Herman Miller, a kidney shaped  desk designed by Gilbert Rohde circa 1941for his Paldao line. This desk pack everything you need. Exotic paldao wood, book-matched in everyway. It is created using two oval cases of drawers under both sides of the exotic thick wood top. Each sides is wrapped in leather and lined with brass nail head trim. There are six drawers of varying depth with a pull out writing surface on the top left. Drawer pulls are carved wood with a repeated geometric pattern carved in reverse relief.

Excellent condition, one of my personal favorites,  no missing veneer and at one time, the desk must have been refinished, but the current condition looks like it was done in the last 10 years. The outside leather and matching chair appear to be original and both in excellent condition. Very unusual to have a matching leather chair,  I’m not sure that this is the desk chair or a side chair to place in your home office or room. The muted peach leather is quite unusual and they look great together.

Rohde arguably one of the most important American designers of the first 1/2 of the 20th century. His work is documented in many books and his work with the Herman Miller furniture company represent an important contribution to the the high quality American furniture which was produced during this period. His vision in the 1940′s really became the benchmark for what we call today Mid-Century modern.
