Art Deco Warrior Goddess Sculpture by Melo

A beautifully executed  Art Deco sculpture of a woman warrior in cold painted metal with a rich patina green base and touches of gilding. The piece is signed by Melo, a sculptor known for equestrian themes in his art and statues of the 1920s and 30s.

Atop a layered marble base, the figure of the horse at full speed is magnificent.  Every detail of  the warrior goddess in stylized helmet and armor is striking. She most likely represents Athena, Goddess of war and wisdom

Images of women in helmets,  riding horseback wielding spears and arrows remind us that glorifying the female form as well as her power is not something that began in this century..but rather the last one!
