Mappin-and-Webb-1910

Mappin and Webb is a noted firm of silversmiths from Sheffield England with roots stemming from 1774 when Joseph Mappin founded the firm. In later decades it became a Royal Warrant holder, was taken over by Asprey & Company and is a brand currently owned by Jewelers Goldsmiths Group.

At the turn of the 20th Century and into the 1930s, Mappin and Webb referred to their brand as “Trustworthy Cutlery” and their “Prince’s Plate” the “only reliable substitute for sterling silver”.   They had a strong presence in many key cities:  London, of course, and Paris, Nice,  Johannesburg, Lausanne and Buenos Aires. The Argentine shop was housed in a lavish Beaux Arts Building, where its silver items were showcased on the Calle Florida. The original wooden chest that is part of this set has an enamel nameplate still intact that says:

Mappin and Webb, London-Paris-Buenos Aires

Mappin and Webb on Florida Sreet

This heirloom set is ready to give as a spectacular bridal gift, or to cherish in your own home.  And by all means, do use it!  Silver should be enjoyed and when housed its special felt chest,  you will find it rarely tarnishes. Once you become accustomed to the fine design, the balanced weight and the elegant table settings you can create you just might want to have it every day!
